Website Q&A
How much does a web site cost?
Every web site is different, which makes it impossible to give a flat price for any particular site. This being the case, all web developers use different methods to determine the cost for web design. We will describe some of the most common methods for web site pricing below and our preffered method of determining your cost.
Per Hour Rate
A very common way for web designers to charge is by the hour. Depending on the experience, location, and many other factors, the hourly rate can be anywhere from $8.00 (outsourced overseas) to $500.00 per hour (For a high-level consultant)! This is a huge difference but we have seen both and just about everything in between. The important thing is to make sure the web developer is worth the rate they charge. Always check with the designers past clients and remember – you really do “get what you pay for”.
We prefer not to charge by the hour except in the case of updates and minor changes, when we do charge an hourly rate our base price is $75 per hour, which may be lowered for ongoing monthly updates and repeat clients.
Per Project Pricing
Many web design firms will give you a set price to complete your project. Make sure you have a thorough and complete requirements list before you begin the project. A good design firm will break out each section with a list of features, specification and assumptions for each section of your website. Make sure you get it in writing so you both have clear expectations.
This is our preferred method of pricing, we will give you a complete breakdown of how we will approach your sites design, what we will do, how long it should take, and an itemized list of what we will charge for your site.
Package Rates
Many web designers will have pre-made packages that are usually cheaper than a complete custom design website. The drawback with packages is that they are probably going to try and fit your business into a pre-made website that might not have all the bells and whistles a custom site has. Most designers will have a flat package rate then allow you to request customization at an additional charge.
We do offer package pricing if you choose to use one of our pre developed templates, or if you find a template you would like customized. This is viable option for someone on a limited budget.
Per Page Pricing
Some web designers charge a flat rate per page, this can be as low as $50 although most designers in the USA will charge $100 – $200 per page. This pricing is usually for basic static brochure web sites that do not require a lot of custom features. The per page price may go down (with a bulk discount) depending on the number of pages you need. In my experience, you will usually find the designers with less experience (and who charge lower prices) are the ones who usually charge per page prices. Also this pricing model seems to be more popular in rural areas.
Unless specifically requested we do not offer per page pricing.
Once I get a site is that all I need to do?
Simply put, No. Having a site is important, getting it seen and giving consumers a reason to return to your website are both drastically important. Unless you have the market cornered on item X and are well known for it already, you need to keep your site fresh, engaging and prominant.
Flash or HTML based site, which is better?
They both have their merits, now that Google can search Flash site for links and content they are no longer impossible to get good rankings with. Flash can give you a highly interactive exciting site and will look the same for anyone viewing them without needing CSS/HTML hacks etc. HTML can be easily indexed in search engines and can still have a clean interesting design. Once we get an idea of what your goal is for your site we will recommend the best way to proceed with it.
